CMS or Static Website – Which one is better?

Content Management Systems known as CMS are common these days, it is so much easier to use that most of us do not even consider using the alternative website management system like a static website.

It’s the era of internet, where one needs to have know-how in HTML to manage the websites but isn’t it the job of a web developer? Having a CMS based website, with a little training of text editor, the whole web design can be altered or managed.

Static websites might be few, but they are not still in use for various reasons. Keeping in mind the given facts, you can analyse, whether you need a static website or a CMS based website.

Number of pages

A static website usually have few pages and each have a different HTML structure and layout. Coding has to change for every page every time you want to make a change.

CMS may also has few pages, but they are manageable in few clicks. Each module can be altered, which is not problematic.

Updating

If someone in your company knows HTML, then updating a static website won’t be an issue, but if it is not the case then having a CMS based website would be better as it has a built-in text editor which works like a word processor and anyone can update the website easily.

Functionality of website

If the function of your website is limited to store information and internal communication, then a static website will do well for you, but if you want to have a highly interactive website which can store and process information and calculations then you would need a CMS based website.

Hosting of website

CMS hosting costs more than static website hosting. CMS requires higher bandwidth and more storage. Eventually keeping it up-to-date, maintenance, making a backup, security modules will be expensive. If you have the budget, nothing is better than CMS. Otherwise static website itself is not a bad option.

Budget

Static website development is cheaper than developing a CMS based website. Although, maintenance of static website equals that of a CMS based website. Paying a developer in the long term for a static website can exceed CMS maintenance costs. You would not want to save on development expense and spend more than that over time.

Purpose of website

Static website design is best for micro-sites for sub-brands, sales campaigns, marketing, placeholder sites and small companies where there is minimum functionality required. You can save a lot of money if the site only has to store information.

If a site has to perform complex functions, then CMS based website will be better. CMS allows easy updating and alteration.

Conclusion

Conclusively, a static website is for simpler functions. It would be a waste of money if you go for a CMS and do not utilize its functionality. CMS is for bigger deals and excessive functionality. You can run your business more efficiently and successfully by using CMS website. So, do not wait anymore and be a successful businessman.
